Background:
NorthStandard has appointed long-serving executive Steve Cockburn as Chief Executive Officer of its European business, reinforcing its commitment to Ireland as a strategic base for marine insurance operations. Cockburn will be based in Dublin, where NorthStandard Europe now oversees around 40 percent of the group’s worldwide insurance portfolio.
The leadership change comes after the full integration of the group’s two former Dublin operations, which had previously operated as North P&I and The Standard Club. Prior to their merger in 2023, the two organisations were the only protection and indemnity clubs established in Ireland. Their combination has created a sizeable European insurance operation located in one of Europe’s leading financial and commercial centres.
Cockburn will relocate from Newcastle and brings more than 20 years of experience within the organisation. He has held several senior positions, including leading global geographical sectors and chairing the International Group’s Compulsory Insurance Committee. He also played a central role in managing the merger process between North and Standard, helping to align operations and teams.
As CEO of NorthStandard Europe, Cockburn will continue to serve on the group’s executive leadership team. Senior leaders across claims, underwriting, finance, and risk in Dublin will report to him, in line with regulatory requirements set by the Central Bank of Ireland.
Cockburn said the expansion of operations in Ireland reflects the group’s ambition to build Dublin into a centre of excellence for marine insurance. He added that future growth will focus on strengthening existing teams while attracting skilled professionals from Ireland and abroad.
From January 2026, the European leadership team will move into new offices at Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in Dublin Docklands. Cockburn will also retain responsibility for European member relationships, covering regions including the Mediterranean, Ireland, Greece, and Northern Europe.
The move comes as Ireland prepares for its EU Presidency in the second half of 2026, a period expected to bring increased focus on maritime and insurance policy.
