Background

ACI Worldwide has joined the European Payments Initiative as a member and launched Wero, a digital wallet, through its Payments Orchestration Platform. The move allows merchants and banks across Europe to access the fast-growing payment option directly through the platform.

It is believed that this deal will help to promote further adoption of Wero, a digital wallet that was introduced by EPI in 2024. Built on SEPA instant payment infrastructure, the service enables direct account-to-account transfers and is designed to offer an alternative to fragmented payment systems across the region.

Wero is available in Belgium, France and Germany, where instant person-to-person payments are done. Online payment capabilities got introduced in a few markets too, and more services, along with in-store payment options, are planned for the next rollout.

Under the partnership, businesses connected to ACI’s payments network will be able to offer Wero as a payment method without building separate integrations. The move is expected to increase the wallet’s reach as EPI prepares to enter Luxembourg and the Netherlands and explores expansion into other European countries.

The deal comes as instant payments gain momentum across Europe following new regulatory requirements that have pushed banks and payment providers to support real-time transactions. Industry forecasts suggest adoption will continue to accelerate over the next few years.

ACI said the addition of Wero would help simplify payment acceptance for merchants operating across multiple markets. EPI, meanwhile, views the partnership as an opportunity to make the wallet more widely available and strengthen Europe’s payment infrastructure.

Wero currently serves around 55 million users, making it one of the region’s largest emerging instant-payment networks.
