Female Startups SkinCoat and FemmeMeno Raise €1m Investment

UCC saw two women-led startups that include SkinCoat and FemmeMeno raise over €1 million in investment from Enterprise Ireland Funding.

Funding these organizations will give a boost to the research undertaken by the startup in their innovation of skin health and women’s health, respectively.

Dr. Julie O’Sullivan, founder of SkinCoat and Dr. Siobhain O’Mahony, founder of FemmeMeno have jointly raised €1,046,747 in funding. Enterprise Ireland offered the funding under the Commercialisation Fund Programme.

FemmeMeno was created to assist and empower women going through peri/menopause, resulting in hormone balance, increased energy, and general well-being.

SkinCoat is a topical probiotic cream developed to provide symptom relief for eczema patients. Eczema is commonly observed in Ireland with one in ten adults and one in five children suffer from Eczema.

She remarked that a contemporary entrepreneur is the backbone to economic growth and development, yet women still face a challenge of fund unavailability, unconscious bias, the dearth of female mentors, and space barriers.

The good news, however, is that these are shifting as the number of women entrepreneurs in Ireland exceeds now the EU average so says Dr Cudmore.

Statistics also show that in 2023, for example, 31% startups funded by Enterprise Ireland had a woman among the founders.

Enterprise Ireland funding will drive the technology development and accelerate the two start-ups emerging from the APC Microbiome Ireland, hosted at UCC.
