Background

The European Commission and Canada held the EU-Canada Energy Security Business Roundtable on the sidelines of the 11th IEA Energy Efficiency Conference in Montreal, reaffirming their commitment to a stronger transatlantic energy partnership.

Dan Jorgensen, EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing, and Tim Hodgson, Canada’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, co-chaired the roundtable, bringing together EU ministers, Canadian provincial governments and companies from both regions to push forward cooperation on electrification, clean energy technologies and liquefied natural gas.

Participants talked through ways to build stronger, more diverse clean energy supply chains, with focus on electricity grids, critical components and the conditions needed to draw in private sector investment.

They also looked at Canada’s role in Europe’s energy security, including Canadian LNG. A business-to-business workshop on LNG followed the roundtable, linking Canadian projects with potential EU buyers.

Building on commitments made at last year’s EU-Canada Summit, participants pointed to further ways to strengthen transatlantic business cooperation on energy, drawing on the strong economic links between the two regions.

Against a backdrop of rising global energy demand and geopolitical uncertainty, participants agreed the EU-Canada partnership matters now more than ever.
The talks will feed into the agenda for the next EU-Canada Summit, set for October 29-30, 2026, in Canada.

Jorgensen said the EU-Canada partnership goes beyond shared values, calling it a strategic asset at a time of turbulent geopolitics and volatile energy markets.

Hodgson said the discussions show a shared commitment to strengthening global energy security through diversified supply and clean energy technologies, adding that the talks reinforce Canada’s role as a reliable energy partner for the EU.
