Representatives of Syria’s private sector held virtual talks with the European Commission to discuss steps for boosting economic cooperation and drawing in investment. Executives from several European companies also joined the discussion.

The talks centered on the needs of Syrian businesses and the obstacles facing the private sector, particularly in manufacturing, exports, imports and infrastructure.
Participants also covered support for small and medium-sized enterprises, greater Syrian participation in international trade fairs, and easier business travel to Europe.

Alaa al-Ali, chairman of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce, said the federation has rolled out its first accredited professional certification system.

He said the program aims to align workforce skills more closely with what the labor market needs. He added that the federation wants closer cooperation with European institutions on vocational training, knowledge transfer and capacity building.

Mouddar Khouja, Secretary-General of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce, attended the meeting along with members of the federation’s board and heads of its specialized committees.

Representatives from the European Commission and European firms working in the industrial, energy and logistics sectors also took part.

The federation said the talks form part of a broader push to strengthen ties with international economic organizations, expand the reach of Syrian businesses in foreign markets, attract fresh investment and support the country’s economic recovery.

The discussions mark a step toward deeper engagement between Syrian and European business communities as both sides look to build long-term economic partnerships.
